Best Financial Advisers in Durham

From a chartered independent practice at Mandale Business Park to St. James's Place partner practices and a Claypath mortgage office, a guide to FCA-regulated financial advisers in Durham and how to choose one.

durhamcity.live·

Retirement planning, a pension pot you are not sure what to do with, an inheritance to invest or a first mortgage to arrange: these are the moments when a qualified financial adviser earns their keep. Durham has a handful of established practices with genuine offices in and around the DH1 postcode, from a chartered independent firm on the Belmont side of the city to partner practices of a national wealth manager and a mortgage office on Claypath. This guide sets out who they are, how they work, and what to check before you sign anything.

Nothing here is personal financial advice. It is a starting point for your own research, and every firm below should be checked on the FCA Register before you go further.

Independent or restricted: the key difference

Every adviser in the UK must be authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority, either directly or as an appointed representative of a firm that is. Beyond that, advisers fall into two camps. Independent advisers can recommend products from across the whole market. Restricted advisers recommend from a narrower range, often a single provider's products, which is the case for St. James's Place partner practices. Neither model is automatically better, but you are entitled to know which one you are dealing with, and a good adviser will tell you plainly at the first meeting.

Wealth of Advice

Wealth of Advice is a Durham firm of chartered financial planners based at Swale House on Mandale Business Park, Belmont. It has been advising clients since 2011 and describes its service as independent financial advice, with a focus on pensions and retirement, investment management, and estate and tax planning. The firm's FCA reference number (563909) is shown on its website, and it says initial discussions are free of charge, with clients told in advance before any charges begin.

The emphasis is on long-term planning rather than one-off product sales: helping people work out whether they can retire early, how to draw an income in retirement, and how to pass wealth on to the next generation.

Best for: Best for: independent, chartered retirement and later-life planning from a DH1 office.

Northumbria Financial Management

Northumbria Financial Management works from the Riverside Centre on Frankland Lane, just north of the city centre near Framwellgate. It is a St. James's Place partner practice, which means it is an appointed representative of St. James's Place Wealth Management and advises only on that group's products and services.

Its services cover investment, retirement and protection planning, mortgages, corporate services for business owners and intergenerational wealth planning, and the practice lists specialist areas including medical professionals, company directors and retired clients. The office is open Monday to Friday.

Best for: Best for: a full wealth-management relationship within the St. James's Place range.

GCA Financial Planning

GCA Financial Planning, the trading name of EC Financial Planning Limited, has its office at Shincliffe Grange in High Shincliffe, a couple of miles south-east of the city centre. It is also a St. James's Place partner practice, so its advice is restricted to the St. James's Place range, and the practice says it has offered financial planning for more than 30 years.

Meetings can take place at the Shincliffe office, at home or at work, or online. The service list mirrors the St. James's Place model: investments, retirement and protection planning, mortgages, corporate services and intergenerational planning.

Best for: Best for: face-to-face planning on the quieter edge of the city, with home and virtual meetings available.

Durham Mortgage Solutions

If what you need is a mortgage rather than investment advice, Durham Mortgage Solutions has an office at 96 Claypath in the city centre and a second at Whitfield House in Meadowfield. It is a trading name of Just Mortgages Direct Limited, an appointed representative of The Openwork Partnership, and arranges mortgages for first-time buyers, home movers, remortgages, new builds and buy-to-let, alongside protection and home insurance.

Ask at the outset how the firm is paid and whether any broker fee applies to your case, and which lenders it can search. That is good practice with any mortgage adviser.

Best for: Best for: first-time buyers and remortgagers who want a broker with a Claypath office.

Fees, qualifications and free guidance

Advisers are paid in different ways: a fixed fee, an hourly rate, a percentage of the money they manage, or a combination, and mortgage brokers may receive a lender fee, charge you a fee, or both. Ask for the charges in writing before you commit, including any ongoing annual charge, and compare like with like.

On qualifications, the minimum for a regulated adviser is a Level 4 Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning. Chartered Financial Planner status is a higher, Level 6 standard.

Not everyone needs paid advice. MoneyHelper, the government-backed service, offers free, impartial guidance on pensions, debt and everyday money questions. If you are 50 or over and have a defined contribution pension, Pension Wise (part of MoneyHelper) offers a free appointment explaining your options for taking the money. It will not recommend a product, but it is an excellent first step before you pay anyone.

Before you hire, check:

  • The firm and the individual adviser on the FCA Register, and that the contact details you have match those on the Register.
  • Whether the advice is independent or restricted.
  • How the adviser is paid, in writing.
  • That you would have access to the Financial Ombudsman Service if something went wrong.
