Christmas Lights Switch-On in Durham 2026
Durham Christmas Sparkle, the city's Christmas lights switch-on, is on Sunday 29 November 2026 from 5pm to 6.15pm in the Market Place. It is free, run by Durham BID, and falls the weekend before the Christmas Festival.
Durham's Christmas lights go on in the Market Place, under the statue of Neptune and the equestrian statue of Lord Londonderry, with the cathedral towers above the rooftops. The event is called Durham Christmas Sparkle, and it is short, free and very much a city-centre occasion: about an hour and a quarter of music and street entertainment, a countdown, and the city centre lights coming on.
The date for 2026
Durham Christmas Sparkle is on Sunday 29 November 2026, from 5pm to 6.15pm, in Durham Market Place. It is free and there are no tickets.
It is organised by Durham BID, the city centre's business improvement district, which has published the 2026 date on its Life in Durham events listing. In recent years it has been supported by the City of Durham Parish Council.
The timing is worth noting. The switch-on falls the Sunday before the Durham Christmas Festival (Friday 4 to Sunday 6 December), so the city is lit for the festival weekend rather than switching on during it.
What happens on the night
Durham BID's listing promises live music, street performers and seasonal attractions in the city centre, with the lights switched on during the evening. The 2026 host, performers and running order have not been announced yet. Check lifeindurham.co.uk and Durham BID's social media nearer the date.
For a sense of the format: in 2024 the event ran from 5pm on Sunday 24 November, was hosted by Hits Radio North East, and included local street entertainers and a visit from Father Christmas. In 2025 it was on Sunday 30 November, 5pm to 6.15pm, hosted by the Hits Radio breakfast presenters Steve and Karen with local acts and special guests. None of that is confirmed for 2026.
Best for:
Best for: families with young children. It is early in the evening, short and over by tea time.
Where to stand
The Market Place is small, and that is part of the appeal: nowhere is far from the stage. The Town Hall and St Nicholas' Church line one side of the square, and the edges near them are the easiest places to step out of the crush. Arrive by about 4.30pm if you want to be near the front, especially with small children.
The streets leading into the square (Silver Street, Saddler Street and Claypath) are narrow and fill quickly, so agree a meeting point beforehand in case anyone gets separated.
Getting there and parking
By train, Durham station is about ten minutes' walk from the Market Place, downhill on the way in via North Road and Framwellgate Bridge. Trains from Newcastle take around twelve minutes. See our guide to getting to Durham.
Park and ride is the council's recommended way into the city. Durham County Council says the Belmont and Sniperley sites run seven days a week, roughly 7am to 7pm, but Howlands does not run on Sundays. The switch-on finishes at 6.15pm, which leaves little time to catch a bus back, so check the 2026 timetable before relying on it.
Driving, the Walkergate car park and Prince Bishops shopping centre car park are both within a few minutes' walk of the Market Place. Both will be busy. Both are outside the peninsula's road user charge zone, which is the reason to park there rather than try to drive any closer. Road closures for 2026 have not been published.
Our guide to getting around Durham has more on buses and parking.
Accessibility
The Market Place is fairly level, but every route into it involves a slope or cobbles. Framwellgate Bridge and Silver Street climb from the river, and Saddler Street climbs further towards the cathedral. Coming from Walkergate, behind the Market Place, avoids the steepest of the climbs from the river. No dedicated viewing area has been announced for 2026.
Food and drink nearby
The Market Tavern is on the Market Place itself and is the obvious place for a warm-up drink, though it will be packed. Bells Fish and Chips, also on the Market Place, is a classic post-switch-on tea. The Bishops Mill in Walkergate has more room and a riverside setting, and Flat White Kitchen on Saddler Street is a short walk from the square. Check Sunday opening hours before you go, and expect everywhere near the Market Place to be busy.
Durham Market Hall is closed on Sundays, so do your market shopping on the Saturday.
Best for:
Best for: a drink on the Market Place before 5pm, then fish and chips once the lights are on.
