Durham Cathedral Completes Its New Cuthbert Centre for Pilgrimage and Prayer

Durham Cathedral has completed work on the Cuthbert Centre for Pilgrimage and Prayer, a new dedicated space for visitors and pilgrims to pause, reflect and engage with the Christian tradition that has drawn people to the city for more than a thousand years. The cathedral marked the completion of the building work with an official event in early September, according to Visit County Durham.

A space inspired by St Cuthbert

The centre takes its name from St Cuthbert, the seventh-century saint whose shrine has stood behind the high altar of the cathedral since the medieval period and whose story is bound up with the very founding of Durham. At the heart of the new centre is the renovated Chapel of the Holy Cross, which sits beneath the deanery, alongside a kitchen and a communal area for hospitality. The work has also introduced step-free access throughout, meaning the chapel is fully accessible to all visitors for the first time.

The project is part of the cathedral's wider Vision 2033, a long-term plan looking ahead to the coming years of the cathedral's life and mission. It has been supported principally by the Friends of Durham Cathedral, whose members number several thousand around the world, together with the Ardeola Charitable Trust.

An open day later this month

Members of the public will be able to see the completed centre at an open day on Saturday 26 September 2026, with a fuller programme of pilgrimage and prayer activities due to launch in spring 2027.

The Very Revd Dr Philip Plyming, Dean of Durham, said the centre was about "creating a lasting legacy that will help people encounter the richness of pilgrimage and prayer, deepen their faith, and find space for reflection and renewal." The Revd James Shelton has been appointed Director of the Cuthbert Centre.
