About This Event

Local historian and archivist David Butler leads a short tour of the Market Place and the inside of Durham Market Hall, the Victorian covered market that opened in 1851 on the site of the Neville family's medieval palace. The tour covers the Market Place's role as a trading hub since the 12th century, the Victorian project that created the hall, and the former prisoner holding cells now used by traders. The tour meets outside the top of the Market Hall entrance ramp; it is free but places are limited, so book by emailing marketing@durhammarkets.co.uk or calling 0191 384 6153.
