About Fields Fish Shop

Fields Fish Shop sits on Durham Road in the former pit village of Esh Winning, a few miles west of the city and reachable by bus from Durham bus station. It has been run by the Fields family since 1915, across five generations of fish fryers, and its real distinction is the coal-fired range: it is one of only a handful of commercial coal-fired fryers still working in the UK, and you can smell the coal burning before you reach the door. Fish is cooked to order and portions are generous, with the cod and the black pudding both singled out by regulars.

This is a proper old-fashioned chippy rather than a sit-down restaurant, and it keeps limited hours, opening on selected days and around traditional lunch and tea times, so it is essential to check the current opening times before making the trip out. For anyone who wants to taste fish and chips cooked the way they were a century ago, it is well worth the short journey out of the city.
