About La Piazza
La Piazza is a spacious, family-run Italian restaurant set in the atmospheric former Durham Gilesgate railway station, which closed to passengers back in 1966. It serves a broad menu of homemade Italian cooking, from pasta and risotto to stone-baked pizzas and classic meat and fish mains, and is well regarded for friendly service and good value, with keenly priced lunch deals alongside the a la carte. There are vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, and a terrace for warmer days.
Just up from the city centre in Gilesgate, it is a reliable choice for a relaxed family meal, a pre-theatre dinner before a show at the Gala, or a celebration with a larger group in the generous dining room. It opens daily for lunch and dinner. As with any restaurant, it is worth booking ahead at weekends.
