Shaheen's Indian Bistro

Long-established Indian restaurant on the historic North Bailey, close to the cathedral, known for careful cooking and a loyal following over more than 30 years.

About Shaheen's Indian Bistro

Shaheen's Indian Bistro has been a fixture on the North Bailey, in the shadow of Durham Cathedral, for more than three decades, which makes it one of the longest-serving Indian restaurants in the city. It trades on a reputation for cooking dishes to order with a lighter touch than a standard curry house, and the intimate dining room in this historic corner of the peninsula suits a proper sit-down meal rather than a quick takeaway.

The restaurant opens in the evenings, from around 5pm until late, and booking is strongly advised as the small dining room fills quickly at weekends and in term time. It is an easy walk from Palace Green and the Bailey colleges, so it draws a mix of visitors, residents and university diners. As always, it is worth confirming current opening hours when you book.
