The rowing club's Fireworks by the River is the display inside Durham city itself, and the riverside setting is the reason to go — the fireworks are let off over the Wear from the boathouse on Green Lane, a walk from the city centre rather than a drive out to a field.\n\nGates open at 5pm and the display follows at around 7pm, with the bar open until 9pm afterwards. Tickets are among the cheapest of any organised display in the area at four pounds fifty for adults and three pounds fifty for children, with under-fours free, and they are booked online in advance.\n\nIt is a club event rather than a council one, so the scale is modest compared with the county ground at Chester-le-Street — but for anyone in Durham it is by far the easiest to get to.
