Christmas in Durham 2026

A guide to Christmas in Durham in 2026: the Sparkle lights switch-on on 29 November, the Christmas Festival from 4 to 6 December, carols at the cathedral, the Gala pantomime, riverside walks and park and ride.

Durham does Christmas on a small scale and in a remarkable setting. The lights go on in a Market Place you can cross in a minute, the market fills the green between a cathedral and a castle, and the carols are sung under a Norman roof. This guide covers what happens every year, with the confirmed dates for 2026.

The lights: Durham Christmas Sparkle

The city's lights switch-on is called Durham Christmas Sparkle. In 2026 it is on Sunday 29 November, 5pm to 6.15pm, in the Market Place. It is free, needs no ticket and is run by Durham BID, which lists the date on its Life in Durham events calendar. Expect live music and street performers; the 2026 host and line-up have not been announced.

It is short and over by tea time. The Market Tavern and Bells Fish & Chips are both on the square. Our full guide to the Christmas lights switch-on in Durham has where to stand, parking and accessibility.

The markets: one weekend only

Durham's Christmas market is a three-day festival, not a month-long market. The Durham Christmas Festival runs from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 December 2026 across Palace Green, the Cathedral Cloisters, Durham Market Hall and the Market Place. The craft marquee on Palace Green, between Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle, is ticketed; the Cloisters, Market Hall and Market Place are free.

The weekend ends with the Children's Lantern Parade and Saint Nicholas' Service on Sunday 6 December at 3pm, which leaves the Market Place for the cathedral. Our guide to Christmas markets in Durham covers tickets, the free taxi up the hill and the markets nearby.

Carols and services at the cathedral

Much of the cathedral's Christmas season is free. Confirmed for 2026:

  • Christmas Tree Festival, Sunday 22 November to Sunday 3 January, a trail of trees through the Cloisters, each decorated by a local organisation
  • Advent Procession, Saturday 28 November at 6pm, also on Sunday 29 November, candlelit and a fine start to the season
  • Carols for All, short family carol services on Friday 4 December at 11am and 2pm and Sunday 6 December at 1.30pm, with no tickets needed
  • A Ceremony of Carols, Saturday 12 December at 6pm, Britten sung by the cathedral's choristers, free with a retiring collection
  • Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, Tuesday 22 December at 6pm and Christmas Eve at 3pm, with no tickets needed

Free services fill up, and in past years people have queued outside, so arrive early and dress warmly. The cathedral will publish its Christmas Eve and Christmas Day service times on its own website.

There are ticketed concerts too: The Big Christmas Sing A-Long with Aled Jones and Alexander Armstrong on 2 December, G4 Christmas on 23 November, The Snowman with live orchestra on 5 December and the Friends of Durham Cathedral Christmas Concert on 10 December. St Cuthbert's Hospice holds its Light Up a Life remembrance service there on 13 December.

Best for: Nine Lessons and Carols. It is free and unticketed, so come early.

Pantomime at the Gala

The Gala Theatre on Millennium Place stages the city's pantomime. In 2026 it is Rapunzel, from Thursday 19 November to Thursday 31 December, with tickets from £10. The run includes a BSL-interpreted performance (5 December, 2pm), an audio-described one (5 December, 6.30pm) and a captioned one (12 December, 6.30pm). The Gala also lists relaxed performances, so check those dates with the box office.

For under-sevens, the Gala's own The Elves and the Shoemaker runs from 8 to 24 December, with puppetry and morning and early afternoon shows.

Meeting Father Christmas

The Christmas Festival programme includes a Father Christmas grotto over the festival weekend. Other grottos in the city have varied from year to year, and none had published 2026 dates when we checked, so look at venue websites nearer the time rather than relying on last year's arrangements.

Festive walks

The best free thing to do in Durham at Christmas is walk the riverbanks round the peninsula, below the cathedral and castle between Framwellgate Bridge and Prebends Bridge. The paths are muddy and dark in winter, so go in daylight. Our guide to walking the World Heritage Site has the route, and best walks in Durham has longer options.

For something organised, Saturn Running's Santa Run North starts from Durham Amateur Rowing Club on Green Lane on Saturday 12 December at 10.30am, with 2.5km and 5km options along the Wear.

Boxing Day and New Year

Durham has no big Boxing Day event of its own. For most people the tradition is simply a riverside walk round the peninsula, or a stroll in the Durham University Botanic Garden if it is open (check its holiday hours first). At New Year, Durham Churches Together held a New Year's Eve service at the cathedral at 5.30pm in 2025; the 2026 arrangements have not yet been published.

Shopping, parking and park and ride

Durham BID has not announced any late-night Christmas shopping evenings for 2026, so check Life in Durham nearer the time. Durham Market Hall is open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 4.30pm.

Park and ride is the easiest way in. Durham County Council's Belmont and Sniperley sites run every 15 minutes, with car parks open 7am to 7pm, seven days a week, and parking is free when you take the bus. An adult day pass is £2.20. Howlands does not run on Sundays, and all sites close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. The car parks close at 7pm, so check the timetable before an evening event.

The peninsula has a road user charge, so if you drive, park at Walkergate or the Prince Bishops car park rather than trying to get closer. Our guide to getting around Durham has more.
